POSTERITY

The robots came today.
We asked if they might stay.
At first it was our work;
then they took our play.

They made our cars and toys,
attended all our joys,
prepared our food and drink,
gave us time to think.

The leisure they bestowed
with all that time to think
became a weary load
we doffed without a blink.

No one saw it coming;
no distant bells or drumming.
We simply evanesced
to endless dreariness.
